Biography

Peter Totterdill is Joint Chief Executive of the UK Work Organisation Network (UKWON), a not-for-profit coalition of employers’ organisations, trade unions, universities and business support organisations committed to developing and disseminating new ways of working. He is also Visiting Professor at Kingston University Business School, London.

Peter’s early background is in economic development and he has a PhD in industrial restructuring and public policy. In 1982 he created the Nottingham Local Economy Project with local authority and central government support. He later worked in senior positions for the City Councils in Nottingham and Sheffield before spending periods of time in academic research, teaching and private consultancy. Peter was subsequently appointed as Professor of Work Organisation at Nottingham Trent University where he established The Work Institute as an externally funded centre for research and consultancy. From this base he built and led the European Work & Technology Consortium involving research partners from across the EU. From 1997-2004 Peter was Non-Executive Director at Nottingham City Hospital NHS Trust where he had particular responsibilities for governance, working lives and workplace partnership.

Peter left Nottingham Trent University in 2005 to devote more time to UKWON, which he helped to create in 1998 with support from several employers’ organisations, trade unions, universities, professional bodies and public policymakers. Under his leadership UKWON runs a portfolio of projects embracing research on leading-edge practice in work organisation, future-oriented thinking about work, public policy development, workplace dialogue and innovation, and inter-organisational learning (seewww.ukwon.net). He was also a European Policy Director with ECOTEC Research and Consulting from 2006–8.

Peter has published several , chapters and papers relating to economic development and work organisation. He speaks frequently at conferences and seminars to practitioners, policy makers and researchers throughout Europe and beyond.

Peter is Chair of Muzika, an arts-based charity working with severely disadvantaged adults and children in Romania. He is also a Trustee of Poltimore House, a charity committed to the restoration of a 16th-18th century mansion in Devon as a leading centre for creative thinking and enterprise
